The key idea is giving a physical form, a tangible representation, to information and computation; this differentiates our approach from the graphical user interface. The tangible representation is tightly coupled with the computation inside the computer, but the representation is physical, so that it also serves as a control mechanism, allowing people to directly grab and manipulate. By doing so, they can control the internal computation or digital information. So the coupling of tangible representation and control is one of the key features of the tangible user interface.

Además de poder controlar desde un objeto, la idea es experimentar con estimulos más allá de lo visuales, el tacto, el oído... que brinden otro tipo de experiencia y de conocimiento al usuario. La información sonora juega un rol importante en el desarrollo de la instalación, y el tacto y el movimiento de la llave, son determinantes para la interacción y el funcionamiento del sistema.
